Expectations of Competing in Bodybuilding

The life of a bodybuilder. Notice I said “the LIFE” of a bodybuilder because you know what? It IS a lifestyle. I could go on and on, covering various topics over time, but I feel these basic points are crucial to share—especially if you’re a first-time competitor!

Over the past 12 years, we have worked with many NPC competitors across bodybuilding, physique, figure, wellness, fitness, and bikini categories. Among them, a few have truly shown the discipline, humility, and work ethic it takes to be a great competitor.

Here are a few points to keep in mind if you’re a competitor or considering getting involved in competing. This lifestyle is NOT for everyone, and THAT IS OKAY! Whatever your goal, make sure you’re pursuing it for the right reasons. 😊

1. Competing is a Mental Sport

It’s ironic that this sport judges your physical appearance or “aesthetics” because achieving your physical goal requires intense mental toughness!

• You can’t eat emotionally as most people do. Instead, you eat for fuel, performance, and purpose.

• You may have to skip certain social gatherings if you think they’ll cause you to mentally break. That said, I personally can go to social events and make it work! Flexible nutrition teaches you how to find that balance.

• You’ll doubt yourself. You’ll be tired but still need to hit the gym and train.

And remember: You WILL be judged. If you lack a strong sense of self-worth, this sport isn’t for you. If you already struggle with body dysmorphia or eating disorders, competing can make it worse.

This is a year-round sport. It’s not just about hitting the stage, posting selfies, and then calling it a day. After competing, what will you do in your off-season or developmental season to improve for your next stage debut? This is a LIFESTYLE, NOT A WEIGHT LOSS PLAN.

2. Stay Humble

Most competitors are the best in their gyms—but what happens when all the “bests” come together on one stage? It’s humbling. Everyone is a big fish in a little pond until they step on that stage.

Don’t let this discourage you; let it inspire you to reach your fullest potential. Everyone starts somewhere, and we’re all at different stages in our journey. If you don’t place, don’t make excuses or tear others down. Instead, focus on improving for the next time.

3. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

If you constantly doubt yourself, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Stressing over others will negatively affect your body.

• Get off Instagram and Facebook if all you’re doing is analyzing the competition.

• Comparing yourself, especially as a first-time competitor, to veterans or pros is pointless—they’ve had years to develop their physiques.

Every pro was once an amateur. Focus on your journey.

4. Blinders On

As you start leaning out, everyone will have advice for you:

“Try this method!”

“Take this supplement!”

“Why do that when you could do this instead?”

Stick to your plan. Do not combine methods; it will only produce half-baked results.

5. You Will Not Stay Stage-Lean Year-Round

Veteran competitors know that the off-season is for developing lean mass, addressing weaknesses, and growing.

• This doesn’t mean “let yourself go.” You should still follow a structured nutrition plan with RevolutioniZe in the off season.

• Don’t expect to stay stage-lean all year—it’s unrealistic.

6. Lifestyle Changes

Competing requires sacrifices:

• No binge drinking or eating carelessly on weekends.

• Limited dining out and eating whatever you want.

• Weighing and measuring your food consistently.

This is an extreme commitment. If you’re doing this just to lose weight, you’ll likely rebound hard afterward. Properly nourishing your body post-show is crucial!!!

7. Respect Your Fellow Competitors

Everyone knows the grind. It’s a mutual understanding. Don’t judge others—you don’t know their challenges, both inside and outside the competition world.

As a competitor, I have nothing but respect for my peers. I’ve even made some incredible friends along the way!

8. Don’t Let Social Media Dictate Your Self-Worth

Social media has its pros (networking, business) but also its cons.

If your self-love and self-worth are tied to likes and followers, please step back and learn to value yourself independently of social media.

9. Everyone Wants to Be a Pro, But Few Want to Do the Work

Day one competitor: “I want to be a pro!”

Coach: “Okay…”

Months later, the client disappears because they realize how hard this goal is.

Everyone wants to be a pro—until they see the work it takes. If you truly want it, you will understand the commitment and time it takes to get to that pro stage! And we will be there to guide you every step of the way!

10. This Is NOT a Weight Loss Plan
